Hellhound

Hellhound

Hellhound is a different song from the rest of the album as it was written to a slightly different remit. Hellhound is the theme song for a film of the same name, written and directed by Brandon Richard Hobson. A mutual friend shared some of my music with the director of Hellhound and I agreed to write a song specifically for the film. It was when it came to writing lyrics that I had to make a couple of decisions.

I was originally going to write two different sets of lyrics, one for the film and one with Watchtower/Jehovah’s Witness connotations, and release two versions of the song (not sure that’s ever been done before?!) but in the end I decided to have a bit of fun with the song, with its “dirty rock and roll” vibe and the “Underworld” theme. So I used some good old artistic license, a pinch of salt, and a few pointed references…

Watchtower does indeed have its fair share of dirty secrets referred to in the first verse. Things they would rather the general public, and certainly their members, didn’t know.

Some of these are listed here https://jwfacts.com/watchtower/watchtower-scandal.php

This is also referred to in the last verse where the lines “If you’re trying to hide your history and sell off all your land, you’d better hope and pray that the light of day doesn’t uncover your dirty hands” alludes to the huge sell off of Watchtower properties, especially locally owned meeting places which were bought and paid for by the members but sold and the proceeds sent to headquarters. Watchtower has paid millions in compensation to abuse victims.
